New players get tripped up by illegal words, missed calls, forgetting to take a tile on their own Peel, and treating their layout as fixed rather than tearing it apart when letters stop fitting.
The short version

Games go wrong when somebody uses forbidden words. Abbreviations, initialisms, names, places, and brands are out. Every word must read left to right or top to bottom, exactly like a crossword. A letter that crosses two words must make sense in both directions.
Handling tiles during calls causes other errors. When you call Peel after placing your last tile, you must draw a new tile along with everyone else. You can also call Dump at any time to return 1 stubborn tile in exchange for 3 fresh ones, adding 2 tiles to your total hand.
Sticking too long to a broken layout slows players down. Grids are not fixed. There is no board, so you are free to dismantle your whole layout and rebuild it from scratch at any moment without penalty.
The finish requires careful verification. When the bunch holds fewer tiles than there are players, the first person to use all their letters calls Bananas. If the group checks that grid and finds an illegal word or a disconnected tile, that player becomes a rotten banana and is out.
The mistake to avoid
It is tempting to keep a flawed layout intact out of fear of losing progress. You are allowed to take your words apart and build something completely new at any point in the game.

No, they cannot. Every player builds a private, separate grid on the table.
Are plurals and verb endings allowed?
Yes. Plurals, verb endings, and comparatives count as ordinary words and are fully allowed in your grid.
