Catching up means pacing yourself against the other grids on the table, because any player who empties their hand can call Peel and force fresh tiles onto everyone else. You regain control by watching their speed and practicing solo games where nobody else sets the pace.

The pace of the racing game is set by whoever finishes their tiles first. When another player uses every tile in their hand, they call Peel out loud. Every player at the table must immediately take one fresh tile from the bunch, including the person who just called it. If you focus only on your own letters, you will be surprised every time a new tile lands in your hand.
Watching other grids gives you warning before a call happens. Keep an eye on how fast the other grids are growing so you can pace yourself against them. A player with one tile left is about to call Peel, which means your own grid must be ready to receive an incoming letter without falling behind.
A solo game runs under the exact same rules, but nobody else is there to call Peel. Playing alone is the only way to slow the game down on purpose, letting you work on tile placement without another player forcing fresh tiles into your hand. You can also play other word games to build up speed before returning to a table with other players.
The mistake to avoid
It is tempting to keep an unusable tile and wait for the right letter to arrive, but holding stuck tiles causes your grid to stall. The rules allow you to call Dump at any time. When you call Dump, you put 1 tile face down into the bunch and take 3 fresh tiles back in return.
