Playing with a crowd

Updated September 4, 2026 · 2 min read

Seven players use an opening hand of 11 tiles each, drawn face down from the 144 tiles in the bunch. The game runs on standard rules and reaches its finish after fewer rounds of Peels.

The short version

  • Count out 11 face-down tiles for each of the 7 players before starting.
  • Turn tiles over together only after someone calls Split.
  • Take 1 fresh tile each time any player calls Peel.
  • Check that the bunch holds fewer than 7 tiles before calling Bananas.

At seven players, 77 tiles are taken at Split, leaving 67 tiles in the bunch. Each Peel takes 7 fresh tiles across the table. If nobody calls Dump, 9 Peels draw 63 tiles, leaving 4 tiles on the table. Because 4 is fewer than the 7 players seated, no further Peel is possible, and Bananas becomes live for anyone who clears their hand.

Calling Dump changes that count. A player who calls Dump returns 1 tile and draws 3, adding 2 tiles to their hand and removing a net 2 tiles from the bunch. Each Dump speeds the arrival of the endgame by lowering the tile count faster than Peels alone.

Smaller starting hands mean players clear their initial letters quickly. With seven people competing to call Peel, tiles enter each grid rapidly, keeping the pace fast from the opening call of Split.

The mistake to avoid

The mistake is to deal 21 tiles to each person at a large table. Tables of 7 or 8 players must start with 11 tiles each, leaving enough tiles in the bunch for regular Peels.
