Bananagrams works for two people without altering the rules. Both players take 21 tiles at the start, which matches the largest opening hand in the game, leaving 102 tiles in the bunch.
The short version
- Count out 21 face-down tiles for each player before calling Split.
- Draw one fresh tile whenever you or your opponent calls Peel.
- Exchange one unusable tile for three fresh ones whenever you choose to Dump.
- Call Bananas when you use all your tiles and too few remain in the bunch for another Peel.
The rules remain identical with two players. Both people draw 21 face-down tiles, flip them together when someone calls Split, and build their own word grids at the same time. When either person uses all their current tiles, that player calls Peel, forcing both players to draw one fresh tile from the bunch.

Starting with 21 tiles each means 42 tiles leave the bunch at the start. That leaves 102 tiles on the table. If neither player uses a Dump, the game can take up to 51 Peels to reach the point where the bunch holds fewer tiles than there are players.
Trading tiles alters the length of the race. Calling Dump returns one tile to the bunch face down and draws three back in exchange. That adds two tiles to your hand and removes two net tiles from the bunch, which moves the end of the game closer.
The game ends when the bunch holds fewer tiles than the 2 players and someone with an empty hand calls Bananas. Once the grid is checked and contains only valid words, that player wins.
The mistake to avoid
The mistake is to change the opening hand size or invent turn-taking because only two people are playing. The rules do not change for two: both players take 21 tiles, build at the same speed, and race to call Bananas.
